CHENNAI: In the end it was a bridge too far to cross for Russian teen Andrey Rublev. The 18 year-old Russian, who knocked Somdev Devvarman on Tuesday breaking Indian hearts, fell to the might of world No. 4 Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 2-6 in the second round of the Chennai Open on Wednesday.

Stan Wawrinka, won the title in 2011 and the last two years and a record 19-4 in Chennai, smacked Rublev . Coming off a season which saw him winning his second Grand Slam title – the French Open – after a win over Roger Federer in the quarterfinals and Novak Djokovic in the final, Wawrinka is clearly at his best. At 3-2 in the first set, Rublev lung a forehand into the mesh before his double handed backhand again found the net in its way.

Things did not change drastically for the Russian in the following set, after being broken in the very first game. The Swiss complemented his opponent he said, “He’s a talented and dangerous player. He is young and still has time to find his way there.”

World No 12 Kevin Anderson has pulled out of the tournament with a recurrent left knee problem on Wednesday, rendering a body blow to the tournament’s star appeal. “It’s a tricky time of the year to be out and obviously disappointing to miss out on my first event in Chennai and the first tournament of the year,” Anderson said.

Key results: Stan Wawrinka (1) bt Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-2; Roberto Bautista Agut (4) bt John Millman 6-4, 6-1; Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (5) bt Ante Pavic 7-6 (5), 6-1; Borna Coric (8) bt Austin Krajicek 6-2, 7-5.
